What Is Poly Pipe, and How Is It Made?
Poly pipe is pipe extruded from polyethylene, most commonly MDPE (medium-density polyethylene) or HDPE (high-density polyethylene), and it’s also called PE pipe or polyethylene pipe in trade and engineering contexts. The material is heated and pushed through a die in a continuous extrusion process, which is why poly pipe is sold in long coils rather than rigid lengths.
That flexibility is one of the main reasons it replaced older galvanised and copper pipe for many rural and irrigation jobs. It can run around obstacles without extra joints, and it won’t corrode underground the way metal pipe does. Wall thickness relative to outside diameter is described using an SDR (Standard Dimension Ratio) number, a lower SDR means a thicker wall and a higher pressure rating, which is why our range spans from Low Pressure SDR41 through to the higher-pressure SDR11 and SDR17 grades.

Picking the right poly pipe grade comes down to matching pressure rating to the job. As covered above, SDR sets the relationship between wall thickness and pipe diameter, and it’s that number, not the colour stripe, that determines poly pipe pressure rating.
Low Pressure Poly Pipe SDR41 suits gravity-fed tanks and low-pressure irrigation. All Black Poly Pipe SDR17 covers most standard rural and domestic pressure requirements. Where a system runs at higher static or pump pressure, such as a bore pump feeding multiple outlets, All Black Poly Pipe SDR11 is the high-pressure poly pipe grade in our range built for that load.
